COLLABORATION WITH NDOHO ANGE COMMISSIONED BY PACE GALLERY / 2022Constructing a vocabulary of signs, systems and references that are rooted in the impulse to convey the experience of a feeling, to transcend that which is easily defined and arrive at the intangible,
this piece speaks of the nightlife community, body proximity and intimacy in connection with Latifah’s paintings.
Through an exploration of enigmatic compositions and images in which bodies and limbs are entangled or twisted, Ange and Berthelot are responding to the night-time sounds of producer and multi-instrumentalist Kinn and turn the gallery into a haunted dance floor, creating a new multi-sensory environment to view Echakhch’s work.
The viewer becomes both participant and spectator, at once part of the mass of bodies and separate to the spectral figures that move mysteriously into the gallery space and beneath the paintings’ rocky surface.
